Blending powerful grooves, free improvisation, and sonic experimentation, Gordon Grdina and Christian Lillinger push the boundaries of their instruments while challenging conventional stylistic categories. Their music brings together electronica, drum and bass, metal, punk, and free jazz in a sound world driven by movement, instinct, and risk.
Gordon Grdina and Christian Lillinger first collaborated in 2017 during the creation of Live, the debut recording of Grdina’s Square Peg project. With their first duo album, DUO WORK, released on ATTABOYGIRL RECORDS, they expanded their sonic palette to incorporate electronics and MIDI-controlled instruments. The resulting soundscapes draw on electronic music, Persian and Arabic traditions, metal, free jazz, and the musical worlds of Alban Berg and Karlheinz Stockhausen. At the heart of their work lies a profound and unwavering commitment to improvisation.
JUNO Award-winning oud player and guitarist Gordon Grdina has built a career spanning continents and decades through a relentless exploration of musical genres, including avant-garde jazz, free improvisation, contemporary indie rock, and Persian and Arabic music. His singular approach to his instruments has earned him recognition as one of the leading voices in the international jazz and improvisation community. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with numerous acclaimed artists, including Gary Peacock, Paul Motian, Marc Ribot, Mats Gustafsson, Colin Stetson, and Joëlle Léandre.
Recipient of the Deutscher Jazzpreis Artist of the Year award, Christian Lillinger is a German drummer, composer, and percussionist. Based in Berlin since 2003, he has developed an international career that has taken him to concert stages and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the United States. He has performed alongside artists such as Joachim Kühn, Dave Liebman, Wadada Leo Smith, William Parker, Joe Lovano, and Peter Brötzmann.
