FLAT EARTH SOCIETY (Belgium)

Traquen’Art is proud to present a supersonic event on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at La Sala Rossa. One of the most audacious big bands on the European continent, Flat Earth Society (FES) of Belgium will premiere the North American presentation of “Terms of Embarrassment”, a tribute to Frank Zappa, the only concert of the group in Quebec before it undertake a tour that has the band performing in other cities and festivals in Canada and the United States.

Quite unlike the more traditional approach to such large ensembles, FES, with its 14 musicians, stands out for its originality, multiple musical influences and directions all while exploring with a dash of irreverent seriousness. All in all, what we see /hear is an exuberant chemical reaction that gives it a very unique character in the field of contemporary musical creation.

Flat Earth Society is not to be confused with the international organization supporting the theory of the Flat Earth – https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_Society. Peter Vermeersh founded FES in 1998. In choosing to abandon the profession of architecture, he preferred to construct a repertoire around an open cosmology on innovative concepts at the crossroads of written music and improvisation. This alchemist has succeeded with his FES cronies, propelling them to the forefront of the Belgian creative music scene. The group has produced 14 albums to date and has performed and toured throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia and has worked, among others, with such musicians as Fred Frith, Uri Caine, Mike Patton (Fantomas), Ernst Reijseger and Toots Thielemans.

Band leader Peter Vermeersh first gained notoriety in the 80’s with the avant garde group Maximalist and later the cult group X-Legged Sally. He has collaborated with several international artists, including film and stage director Josse De Pauw, renowned contemporary Belgian choreographers Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Wim Vandekeybus (also a filmmaker). He has also written music for the Arditti String Quartet and the Smith Quartet, among others.
