Live at l’Astral, Saturday March 8th, 2014 at 9 p.m., Lo’Jo, the musical adventurers from France, are back after a hiatus of several years and many world travels. This, their only second visit to Montréal in their thirty-year plus career, seems incongruous given the ever-growing appreciation and fan-base beyond their French connection. Cinema el Mundo, their thirteenth album, is a trunk full of sounds filled with their travels – from the southern Sahara where they helped organize the first Festival in the Desert in 2001, helping launch the international career of Tuareg band Tinariwen, onto Georgia and the Causcasus, the Reunion Island, from Agadir to Adelaide, not to mention Buenos Aires to Katmandou.

Winners of the 2013 Songlines Music Award, Lo’Jo’s music is built around Denis Péan’s songs, which have been compared to shamanic twins of Tom Waits, he as a Gallic poet brother of Johnny Cash’s later period. Berber sisters, Yamina and Nadia Ned Il Mourid bring rich vocal harmonies and colour to this polyglot sextet, who’s cinema travels beyond continents to the margins of outer space, sweeping back onto our doorstep, ours to savour at last.

“Thirty years of travelling with open ears has given LO’JO’s sound a unique richness. They play funky dubbed-up chanson with a bewildering variety of influences. It adds up to a brilliant whole that scorns classification.” – Andy Morgan, The Guardian (25/07/12)
